In October 2026, Frontex (the EU border agency) and European travel-trade bodies warned of more than 150 unofficial websites offering ETIAS, some using EU symbols. Because no application is processed before launch, any fee paid today buys nothing. When ETIAS opens, apply only on the official EU website or app.
Specific to Australian citizens
Long-haul via the Gulf or Asia
Doha, Dubai or Singapore are outside Schengen: nothing to do there. Your Schengen check and EES registration happen at the first Schengen airport, so if you fly Sydney–Dubai–Frankfurt–Athens, it's Frankfurt.
The 90 days go fast on a long trip
Australians often do several months in Europe. The 90 days cover the whole Schengen area together, and EES now counts them automatically at every crossing. Time in the UK, Ireland or Cyprus is counted separately, which is how many travellers stretch a long trip.
EU passports in the family
Many Australians hold Greek, Italian, Croatian, Irish or other EU citizenship by descent. On that passport there is no ETIAS, no EES and no 90-day limit.
Working holiday visas
A working holiday arrangement with a European country normally gives you a national visa or permit. While it is valid you don't need ETIAS.
The basics, in short
- Passport issued under 10 years ago, valid 3 months after you leave.
- 90 days in any 180, all Schengen countries together.
- ETIAS at launch: €20, valid 3 years or until the passport expires.

France rules for Australian citizensFAQ
Do Australians need ETIAS for Europe in 2026?
No. ETIAS is not in operation (checked 21 October 2026). A valid passport and EES registration at the border are what apply today.
Can I stay longer than 90 days in Europe as an Australian?
Not visa-free in the Schengen area: 90 days in any 180 across all 29 Schengen countries. A longer stay needs a national visa, such as a working holiday visa.
Do I need ETIAS for a stopover in Europe?
Not if you stay in the international transit area. If you pass border control, the normal rules apply.
Is ETIAS the same price for children?
Free under 18, but every child still needs their own application.
Checked: 21 October 2026, against travel-europe.europa.eu, home-affairs.ec.europa.eu, eur-lex.europa.eu, home-affairs.ec.europa.eu. Rules can change: official sites prevail. No ETIAS start date has been announced; we will not guess one.
