UK ETA for Australians
Australian citizens do not need a visa to visit the UK for up to 6 months, but they need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding (required since 8 January 2025).
Specific to Australians
Long-haul via London
Flying Sydney to Europe through Heathrow on one ticket, staying airside? No ETA for now. A stopover in London means entering the UK: you need one.
Youth Mobility Scheme
Australians aged 18 to 35 can work in the UK on a Youth Mobility Scheme visa. With that visa, no ETA.
UK-born parent
If you have the right of abode, you need a certificate of entitlement in your Australian passport instead of an ETA.
Then Europe
Australians travelling on to France, Italy or Spain will need ETIAS once it starts. Not yet: no official date.
What you need to apply

- A photo of your face, taken with your phone.

FAQ
Do Australians need an ETA for the UK?
Yes, since 8 January 2025, for visits of up to 6 months. £20, valid 2 years.
Is the Australian ETA (subclass 601) the same thing?
No. That one is for visiting Australia. The UK ETA is a UK authorisation.
Can I apply for my children?
Yes. Each child needs their own UK ETA, and a parent can apply for them.
